Cattle and Hog Prices End 2024 Higher with Cattle Prices Record High

Negotiated cash cattle remained steady the week ending Dec. 28 while feedlot margins decreased $65 per head to an industry average of $137.33 per head, according to the Sterling Beef Profit Tracker. Meanwhile, beef packers saw losses improve $47 per head to a loss of $86 per head. That puts the packer/feeder margin spread at $223 per head in favor of the feeder.


Cash cattle averaged $195.68 per cwt. the week ending Dec. 28, while Comprehensive Beef Cutout prices posted a $6 per cwt. increase to close at $316.19 per cwt.


Cattle marketed last week carried a total feed cost of $459.37 per head, about $44 more than feed costs for cattle sold the same week a year ago.
